FINRA Arbitration Statistics as of October 2013

FINRA recently its updated arbitration statistics through October 2013.  Through October, there have been 3,156 new cases filed at FINRA. 3,859 cases have closed during the year.  659 cases, or 17%, closed after a full-blown hearing, whereas 1,995 (52%) settled through direct negotiation between the parties.  Interestingly, only 7%, or 284 cases, settled through mediation. 42% of the cases that went to hearing resulted in damages for claimants who were customers.  In 2012, approximately 78% of customer claimant cases resulted, through settlements or awards, in monetary or non-monetary recovery for the investor.   FINRA has a total of 6,444 arbitrators on its roster.
